thoracoscopic-laparoscopic versus open esophagectomy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

چکیده
The aim of this study is to evaluate surgical results and long-term survival of combined thoracoscopiclaparoscopic esophagectomy (TLE) performed for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Data of 59 patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, undergoing TLE from January 2007 to January 2015, were compared to a control group of 59 patients who underwent open esophagectomy (OE) during the same period. The two groups were matched in terms of age, sex, American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) score and clinical TNM stage. Laparoscopic approach resulted in longer operating time (P=0.003) and lower blood loss (P=0.000). There was no difference in perioperative morbidity and mortality rate; TLE approach was associated with a shorter hospital stay (P=0.000). After a mean follow up of 38 months, 5-year disease free survival and 5-year overall survival were 38% and 50% for TLE group, and 36% and 45% for OE group (P>0.05). TLE for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma is feasible and safe in selected patients and can result in good surgical results, with similar outcomes in terms of long-term outcomes.

Minimally invasive esophagectomy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in elderly patients
The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate the value of minimally invasive esophagectomy (combined thoracoscopic-laparoscopic esophagectomy) for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in elderly patients (≥70 years). From January 2009 to December 2014, 58 consecutive patients aged older than 70 years with clinical stage stage I or II esophageal squamous cell carcinoma underwent mini...
متن کاملA case of long-term survival after surgical resection for solitary adrenal recurrence of esophageal squamous carcinoma
BACKGROUND Esophageal carcinomas are highly malignant tumors with a high frequency of lymph node and distant organ metastasis. Treatment for recurrent tumors is generally decided on an individual basis. Although multidisciplinary treatments involving chemotherapy, surgical resection, and radiation are performed, the prognosis remains poor. Here, we report a case of prolonged recurrence-free sur...
متن کاملHypoxemia in minimally invasive esophagectomy for squamous cell carcinoma of lower esophagus
Introduction: Minimally invasive esophage-ctomy for esophageal cancer is the surgical treatment-of-choice, and comprises both thoracoscopy and laparoscopy. The risk of hypoxemia arises during one-lung ventilation in the thoracoscopy stage, especially for patients with reduced lung function, and thus poses significant threat to the surgical outcome. This case report aims to demonstrate one possi...
متن کاملBilateral approach for thoracoscopic esophagectomy with lymph node dissection in the dorsal area of the thoracic aorta in patients with esophageal cancer: A report of two cases
INTRODUCTION The incidence of lymph node metastasis in the dorsal area of the thoracic aorta (DTA) is relatively low in patients with esophageal cancer. It is difficult to approach the DTA using surgical procedures, such as an open thoracotomy and thoracoscopy in the left decubitus position. CASE PRESENTATION Case 1: A 70-year-old man with esophageal cancer underwent thoracoscopic esophagecto...
متن کاملMinimally Invasive Approach to Esophagectomy
BACKGROUND Recent advances in laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgery have made it possible to perform esophagectomy using minimally invasive techniques. The aim of this report was to present our preliminary experience with minimally invasive esophagectomy. METHODS We reviewed our experience on eight patients who underwent minimally invasive esophagectomy using either laparoscopic and/or thora...
